The Program
VRGS is a five day residential summer program hosted on JMU's campus from July 15 to July 20, 2017. This program focuses on the topic of Journalism and students chosen to attend the program choose a "strand" that they will study (photojournalism, writing, sports writing, broadcasting, and online media). Students will get to learn from nationally recognized journalism instructors and will also learn alongside high school students attending JCamp. Students can get their application here or from Ms. Belton in room 210.
The VRGS application is comprised of four parts: personal information and three supplemental sections. Please keep your application organized and clearly label your responses, preferably typed, for each of the three supplemental sections.
Currently, Rockingham County is able to send four students and one student will be sent from each middle school. While Ms. Belton will be part of the selection committee for RCPS, she will not be scoring the EMS applications. The same holds true for the other middle school Challenge teachers and this ensures there is no bias in selection.

- Statement of Interest/Essay: Please communicate clearly and specifically. This is your opportunity in the application to tell us about yourself and really convince us that you are the best candidate to represent EMS at this program.
- Honors, Awards, and Activities: Be as detailed as you can. Sometimes we don't know what an activity is so it is helpful if you name your honor/award/activity and then give us a short description of what it is and your involvement. Please list in categories.
- Teacher Recommendations: I strongly suggest that you ask your teachers as soon as possible if they would be willing to complete a recommendation for you. It is not good to wait until the last minute because, I promise you, your teachers are very busy and it is very important that you give them enough time to complete the recommendation form well. Also, it is a good idea to write a thank you note each time someone does a recommendation for you. This is true for this application and also for any other situation like this in the future.
